Overview
This season involved 45 teenagers who had signed up to be in a reality show on an island, known as "Total Drama Island." on Camp Wawanakwa. The teens all had different expectations for what camp was going to be like, with the underlying idea that it was going to be luxurious. According to Chris, to be on the show, you have to be a teenager and be either "kooky, obnoxious, stuck-up, dense, loud, annoying, filthy, or anywhere remotely in between." The forty five teens chosen were divided into three separate teams; the Screaming Gophers, the Killer Bass and the Rabid Ducks. The three teams were given challenges every three days. The two losing teams would vote one of their members off and the contestants that were voted off would have to walk the Dock of Shame and board the Boat of Losers, which would then take them away. At some point in the competition, the teams would dissolve. After the merge the same elimination process would continue to happen, except then after every challenge only one to two people had invincibility and after every other challenge, two contestants would win super immunity, securing their safety for two straight episodes. At elimination, they would as a whole group have to vote two people out instead of just the teams. This process continued until only two people were left to compete in a final challenge where the season winner would win $1,000,000.
Format
- Team Composition: The forty-five campers were divided into three teams of fifteen.
- Team Swap: Chris decided to swap out a boy and a girl from each team onto opposing teams because team decisions revolved around those members.
- Double Eliminations: Every single episode up until the final six were double eliminations, where every pre-merge episode resulted in two losing teams each voting someone out and every post-merge episode resulted in eliminating the two with the most amount of votes.
- Triple Eliminations: Only two episodes featured triple eliminations, where in both cases, one contestant left the competition before the double elimination vote.
- Fan-Voted Immunity Idol: Fans were able to vote for a contestant to receive a McLean-Brand Immunity Idol, a small wooden carving of Chris's head that can be used by the winner of the fan vote to save themselves from being voted out.
- Battle of the Sexes: The original teams were disbanded into a "boys vs. girls" team for a single challenge at the start of the merge.
- Merge Composition: There were twenty-three campers that were part of the merge, twenty still competing and three returnees.
- Return: Three previously eliminated contestants return at the merge.
- Sole Vote: During the final ten, one of the winners of the invincibility challenge obtained the power to vote out another contestant with their sole vote from a mystery box.
- Elimination Challenge: During the final fourteen, the contestants faced a sudden-death motorcross challenge, where the last two contestants who crossed the finish line were automatically eliminated. During the final three, the contestant who refused to complete one of the eliminated contestants' dare would automatically be eliminated.
- Eliminated Contestants Vote: During the final six, the eliminated contestants residing in Playa Des Losers were given the opportunity to vote for who they want to win out of the remaining contestants, where the player with the least amount of votes was eliminated.
- Final Challenge: Instead of a final elimination ceremony, where the eliminated contestants would vote for a winner, a Final Challenge took place with the final two contestants, in which the first to cross the finish line won the prize money.

Elimination
This is the process in Total Drama Island in which a camper is eliminated; initially, the team that lost the most recent challenge, unless the last challenge happened to be a reward challenge, would vote for a camper and the one with the most votes against them would be voted off the island. Since the teams eventually merged, all the campers began to vote for each other and only the challenge winner received immunity. In certain challenges, a camper would be automatically eliminated without any votes if they lost a challenge after the merge.
